Aquamarines

Aquamarines are the blue variety of the mineral beryl. It is a Type I stone, which means it should be completely transparent and flawless. Numerous locations of beryl deposits give us a steady supply of aquamarine in several different shades. It is found in pegmatites Brazil, Ural Mountains, Siberia, Madagascar, United States, and Afghanistan. The color of this gem is frequently tied to the location it came from. Aqua from Madagascar is usually a medium dark blue and is referred to as "Madagascar Aqua". Blue-green aqua is of a lighter color and is called "brazilian Aqua". It is not uncommon for this gem material to be heat treated to improve the color. Africa is noted for untreated material of a deeper blue color that remains spectacular even in small stones.

Aquamarine is at 7.5 on the Mohs scale and is the traditional birthstone for March. This is an affordable and beautiful gemstone. This stone can be cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner but should not be left for a long time. Gentle cleaning with jewelry cleaner on a soft swab is better.

PrincessJewelry.com has a wide selection of gemstone jewelry.
