myth and folklore history. It has been thought to symbolize everything from psychic powers, purity, and
immortality to good fortune. Emerald is the birthstone for the month of May. The 55th wedding anniversary is
the Emerald anniversary, an exceptional gem for an exceptional milestone. When selecting an emerald, you can be
assured of possessing one of the most extraordinary gemstones the world has to offer.
Ancient Egyptians mined Emeralds nearly 4,000 years ago. Cleopatra was an avid collector of emeralds.
The rich
supply of emeralds was discovered by the 16th Century Spanish explorers who found large emeralds in the possessions
of the Aztecs and Incas. Presently, most of the world’s emeralds are mined in Columbia, Brazil, and Zambia. The
cuts range from the traditional rectangular step-cut (emerald cut), to rounds, ovals, squares, and cabochons. The
hardness rating of emeralds are 7.5 -8 Mohs. Emeralds need mild cleaning to protect their delicate state. They should
not be put in ultrasonic cleaners or exposed to extreme heat, such as a jeweler's torch during repairs. When gems
with gas filled or liquid filled inclusions are subjected to extreme heat there is a risk of the gas or liqud expanding
and fracturing the stone. For this reason, emeralds should be removed from the setting before any repair requiring
the use of a troch. Use a soft damp cloth to clean emerald jewelry. Jewelry cleaner can be used to gently clean the piece.
