Garnets

Most people are familiar with the dark red garnet as the birthstone for January. Garnets are a huge family of gemstones that provide us with wonderful and unusual colors. Garnets come in all shades of red, pink, yellow, green, black, brown, orange, and the extremely rare blue garnets. The list below gives you the type and color of garnets that are commonly used in jewelry.

  • Almandite:     Dark red (most common)
  • Pyrope:         Dark black red (also called "Bohemian" garnet)
  • Rhodolite:      Violet or purplish-pink (reminiscent of fine pink sapphire)
  • Mandarin:     Beautiful orang color
  • Malaia:         Pinkish orange or pure orange
  • Tsvaorite:      Bright vivid lime green (exceptional gemstone)
  • Demanoid:     Brilliant yellow-green (very rare and no new production in the past decades)

All of the pink and/or red colors are at 7-7.5 on the Mohs with the others being somewhat softer. Gentle cleaning is recommended. The color options give jewelry designers unlimited tools when utilizing this wonderful gemstone material.

PrincessJewelry.com has a wide selection of gemstone jewelry.
