Peridots
Peridot is the gem quality material from the mineral Olivine. It is a yellowish-green
orpale yellowish-green. In ancient times, it was named topazos because it was found in an
island near the Red Sea named Topazos,
which is now called Zebirget or St. John's. Since the stone was found there, it confirms
that it is Olivine, which is peridot. Peridot can be still found on the island of Zebirget
(St. John's, part of Egypt). There are also peridot mines on the San Carlos Apache Reservations
in Arizona, the Hawaiian Islands, Burma, and Brazil.
Peridot measures 6.5-7.0 on the Mohs scale of hardness. This stone is fairly soft. Peridot is in
abundant supply and is never treated. The best colored peridot are flawless and have a clean,
bright yellow-green color.
This stone can be cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner but should not be left for an extended length of time. Gentle
cleaning with jewelry cleaner on a soft swab would be the preferred method.
