Tourmalines

Gem tourmaline is from the mineral Elbaite. Many associate pink tourmaline with the October birthstone but tourmaline in any color can actually serve as the birthstone for this month.

Tourmaline can be found in Sri Lanka, Ural Mountains, Afganistan, Burma, United States, Brazil, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Namibia, and other countries. It comes in many different colors. Here is a list of the tourmaline colors:

  • Rubellite: Pink to red
  • Indcolite Shades of blue
  • Verdelite: Shades of green including a beautiful sea foam green color
  • Chrome: Bright vivid green
  • Bi-Color: Two colors in a single stone; i.e. pink and green
  • Party-colored: Three or more colors in a single stone, i.e. watermelon tourmaline
  • Blue: Color of fine aquamarine but rare
  • Paraiba: Exquisite neon blue and vivid blue
  • Purple Vivid purples

Tourmaline is a medium priced gemstone with the exception of the famous Paraiba material. Paraiba tourmaline is priced higher for color gemstones because of the rarity and uniqueness of the color. Tourmaline is at 7-7.5 on the Mohs scale. Gently clean with a jeweler cleaner rather than an ultrasonic is the preferred method of care for this gemstone.
